Bacteria frequently develops in periodontal pockets, leading to gum disease as well as additional tissue and bone loss. Pocket reduction surgery is designed to allow periodontists to adequately access the infected areas and remove the bacteria by eliminating the pockets. They can then surgically reduce the pockets, and smooth the rough and damaged bone surfaces to allow the pocket tissues to attach more firmly. Pocket reduction surgery plays an essential role in the maintenance of a healthy smile by preventing damage caused by a progressively worsening periodontal disease.

Pocket reduction surgery is usually recommended to those whose dental pockets have grown too deep to be adequately cleaned with normal oral care procedures. Your periodontist will measure the depth of the pockets, assess your home care regime, and consider any possible professional care routines prior to recommending surgery. Patients experience a substantial reduction in pocket depth after having the surgery as well as a significantly noticeable improvement in the condition of their gums and teeth.

WHAT IS GUM SURGERY?
Gum surgery involves a medical procedure that removes bacteria and plaque that builds up in pockets below the gum line; where regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. When the bacteria and plaque are left in the gum pockets, they cause the tooth to decay, leaving more space for the bacteria to grow and eventually cause the tooth to fall out. The gum surgery process ensures reinforcement to the tooth that will protect it from further decay.
WHEN DO I NEED A GUM SURGERY?
Surgery to remove the plaque and bacteria underneath the gum line is determined by a trained dentist and confirmed by an oral surgeon when necessary. Three types of surgery are commonly applied. A flap style surgery opens up the gum line, allowing the dentist to remove the plaque and bacteria effectively. The gum is then closed to heal. The second two surgeries either remove overgrowth of the gum line, which is scar tissue affecting the teeth, or gumline restoration surgery which brings the gumline back to a normal function and appearance. After the surgery, specific procedures in brushing and use of an antibacterial toothpaste are to be followed to prevent infection as well as keep the gumline clean going forward.
